Three weeks ago, a draft of the new Netherlands Code of Conduct for Scientific Integrity was released for public comment. At META/e we gave it a thorough, line-by-line read. In many respects, the revision is a solid step forward, but we see five major issues that still need attention.
- Responsibilities should go beyond researchers or research groups
- Problematic characterization of the principle “Independent” in relation to academic freedom
- The limited role of monitoring and reporting in institutions’ duty of care
- Excessive burden on witnesses of integrity violations
- Fraudsters can too easily escape accountability
